Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras , meaning Fat Tuesday, is a celebration where on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, people will stay up and eat food and drink before fasting for Lent. The first celebration of Mardi Gras in the United states was on March 3, 1699. Mardi Gras is traditional a holiday celebrated by the French but when they came over to the United States, they brought these traditions with them.

Mardi Gras in European countries is more of a carnival style where it spreads from the north of France, to the west of France. In the United States Mardi Gras in celebrated in New Orleans on Bourbon Street which is in the french quarters. There are some differences when it comes to the celebrations in France and New Orleans. In France this celebration is only one day long to celebrate the religious part of the holiday where in New Orleans they celebrate Mardi Gras for an entire week and it more of a party than a religious celebration.
